AVG Free Edition includes Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware for your protection, along with AVG LinkScanner. The LinkScanner technology provides for real-time protection against online threats so you don't have to worry when surfing the internet. LinkScanner does this by utilizing two very important components Search Shield and Active Surf-Shield. Search Shield provides a safety rating next to each link inside a search engine such as Google, Yahoo, and MSN telling you if the site is safe or not to visit. Another aspect of LinkScanner is Active Surf-Shield. Active Surf-Shield makes surfing safer due to its ability to scan websites in real-time. This means at the very moment you are on a site Active Surf-Shield will check and continue checking the website for malicious content.

As you can see by this overview, there can be quite a bit of activity occurring behind the scenes while you're online. Just like having locks on your doors and windows,it is recommended to have a security program in place before surfing the internet.
